Yet, as long as the Met Gala exists, there will inevitably be those who view Fashion’s Biggest Night as just another chance to don the classic black tuxedo and call it a day.
Here are ten Met Gala looks that missed the mark in terms of aligning with the event’s theme.

In defense of her Schiaparelli gown choice, J.Lo argued that its wing-like design embodied the essence of a butterfly’s transformation, from slumber to awakening. However, my scrutiny of Jennifer intensifies this year given her co-chair role. Yet, the dress seems to echo her past nude-toned Met Gala appearances, adding a layer of predictability. What’s more, the Tiffany jewelry adorned with birds introduces a discordant element, leaving the overall ensemble feeling disjointed and open to interpretation.

What if I told you that James has been a constant presence at the Met Galas throughout the past decade?
3. Kylie Jenner
When Kylie Jenner graced the Met Gala steps, all eyes were on her in an ivory Oscar de la Renta column gown, complete with a sweeping train that commanded attention. However, social media users found themselves underwhelmed by the simplicity of her ensemble, prompting more yawns than gasps of awe.

After a long-awaited comeback to the Met Gala stage on May 6th, Ariana Grande finally made her grand entrance. Yet, despite the anticipation, her “fairy princess” inspired look left many feeling a bit… underwhelmed

Yet another Stella McCartney creation drew comparisons, this time to Troy Bolton’s ensemble in High School Musical 3, according to the internet.
8. Cara Delevingne
Rachel Goodwin, a makeup artist from Pat McGrath Labs, dubbed this Stella McCartney ensemble as “Joan Of Arc-meets-Twiggy.” While Stella did highlight the use of sustainable, lab-grown gems in her Met Gala creations, personally, I’m not entirely convinced by that angle.

I saw a tweet lamenting a missed opportunity, wishing they could’ve pulled off the funniest move ever: rocking Harry Styles’s iconic “Camp: Notes on Fashion” look. If only dreams could come true!
10. Zoe Saldana
While The Daily Mail suggests that this look epitomizes the theme by portraying a “fairylike” aura, I’m inclined to see it as more of a strategic promotion for Chloé’s Fall 2024 ready-to-wear collection.
